EDWARDS CENTRE 1961-2 Regent Street, extending from the Market Place to George Street (bottom, left and right), consisting of a parade of retail premises with offices above. It occupied the site on which John J. Edwards' Garage stood, at the corner of Regent Street and Horsefair (below). (A photo of the garage just before demolition was published in the Hinckley Times, 23 June 1961, 16.) This business in turn replaced Fulleylove's Coachworks, at which the first ever Hansom Cab was manufactured about 1834, before Joseph Hansom acquired his patent for the vehicle. The Edwards Centre also occupies the former site of the theatre front of ST GEORGE'S HALL.

ELM LEA/ELM LODGE Ashby Road. Imposing pre-1885 residence with Arts & Crafts elements, near the Ashby Road/Middlefield Lane junction. Built for Alfred Ernest Hawley, founder of A. E. Hawley & Company, later Sketchley's Dyeworks. There is a photographic view of the house in the Illustrated Guide to Hinckley (1911).
