13th January 2014 The Big Pit Resistance Group was created and had its first meeting in the Ashby Tavern, Ashby Road.
The green light was given by a Government inspector for Terry Poulton (owner of The Big Pit) to dump some 75,000 cubic metres into the former wildlife haven with up to 75 HGV deliveries a day as a precurser to the construction of some 60 homes.
Despite planning permission to fill and build on the pool being granted, campaigners (which include residents of Hinckley and local councillors) opposed to the fill-in of Hinckley’s Big Pit have launched a fighting fund and pledged to keep up the pressure to prevent the development of the Big Pit.
There are 27 conditions the builders will have to comply with which inculde: noise, drainage, highways, wildlife and the time limit imposed stating that the infilling of the pit must be completed within two years of work starting.
During the initial meeting of the resistance group, they attracted more than 100 people to the Ashby Tavern with feelings running high and a £150 collection.
A second meeting is in the pipeline and support is growing for the group’s Facebook Page.
